SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES REMOVAL OF THE GAMEOS FEATURE FROM THE PLAYSTATION®3 SYSTEM IN NEXT UPDATE

PlayStation® Security updates will remove GameOS features due to piracy.

Tokyo, August 27, 2010 – Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that it will remove the GameOS feauture of its PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system.  The removal will coincide with the v3.50 update to be released by the end of this month in Japan, North America, Europe/PAL territories, and Asian countries/regions.  Users will still be able to enjoy immersive video and audio on the PlayStation®3 system, although only on movie titles.  Support will be added for the PlayStation®Move motion controllers, as well as the ability to watch stereoscopic 3D content.

Bringing in SCE’s expertise in both entertainment and technology acquired from previously developing games, four sound fields and 3d vision enhancements for existing 2d titles have been designed with the help of SCE’s previous expert game designers, to optimize the cinematic experience of all forms of entertainment.

Through the introduction of new peripherals, SCE will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation – except for games, or Linux.

  1. I LOL’ed. :p Please sony, think with your head and get linux back on the ps3, now that you’ve lost the war.

  2. Sounds like aprils fools joke :-/ Removing GameOS cause of piracy? Are they mad or what? What do we get if GameOS is removed lv1 has nothing to do with gaming. It’s only used for communicating other OS’es which are running on top of lv1.

    What do we get then?

    Sounds fake to me :-(

  3. RIDDDDGEEEE RAAAACERRRRRRR. We removed GameOS to make sure the consumer can fully enjoy giant enemy crab damage while still retaining the possibility to play the latest on demand 3D movietitles. even without a 3D tv!

Along with OtherOS removal, and more or less DivX Removal (the DRM) the console that ‘did’ everything…. now a fancy door stop.

  6. Hi
Where did you get the info ? there is nothing on playstation official blog !?

  7. can’t wait this is gonna be the best update by far.

this has to be the best idea ever – to stop people from complaining about updates not adding features Sony is going to keep removing feature to make people think twice about complaining about the lack of features because this proves there can always be less features so be happy with what you got.

LOL I still can’t believe Sony and Nintendo out lasted Sega. I think its time for Sega to get back into the console business. Hell as long as the consoles don’t break and they add features with updates instead of removing them they can’t fail.

  9. What is exactly GameOS?

I don’t have a PS3… I guess this is the ability to launch Games?

If so this is obviously a FAKE.

  10. Sega did not last just because the Dreamcast was actually a test-console for Microsoft’s Xbox, and they were only mere puppets in this market. Thank Peter Moore (who obtained a golden bridge to work at MS after he decided to end the Dreamcast production) and some others.

  12. I’ll be ok as I have a Pine-Drive

it can bypass the removal of GameOS and also allows back-ups to run :-)

    Also makes nice Juice.

  13. guess you didn’t read the last paragraph

    Funny funny funny

  14. Good idea, Sony! After all, only a minority of people actually use their PS3 for GameOS – those who do are just sad losers who can’t afford a PC. I mean, 256MB RAM? What were they thinking? Everyone knows that for a game to be good, you need at least 20GB RAM usage!
